CHAPTER 8

“God damn it, make it happen!” Rubin shouted into the phone. “And I don’t give a shit what you need to do or who you need to fuck. Got it?” He slammed the phone down and dragged his hands through his hair. Dealing with that little fuck was a true test in Rubin’s patience, and there were too many assholes he had to deal with on a daily basis.

Rubin loosened his tie and blew out a breath. He’d seen Veronica walk by with Kelly a second ago and he was itching to go see her. Spending last night without her was a new kind of hell he wasn’t too eager to experience again any time soon. Unfortunately, she’d made her line in the sand, and he hadn’t quite figured out how to safely cross it just yet.

The mandatory staff meeting would be starting soon, so he better make his move now, before they were surrounded by the entire staff. He left his corner office and went down to Kelly’s. He entered without knocking. She was standing at the window, back to the door.

He smiled. Putting her in this office was a good call. He knew she’d love the view.

“Good morning, Kelly,” he said, softly closing the door behind him.

She jumped and turned around to face him. At first she appeared shocked, then angry, and finally she broke into a smile. “Good morning to you as well, Mr. Beato.”

He frowned and shoved his hands in his pockets. “I really don’t think such formalities are necessary. Not after . . .”

“Please don’t,” she said, shaking her head. “We agreed.” Kelly glanced around as if she were afraid someone could hear them or someone else would come walking in.

Rubin crossed the room toward her, stopping before he actually touched her, although it was highly tempting. “The dress looks fantastic on you,” he said, his gaze travelling down her gorgeous body, then back up again.

God, he wanted her. Wanted to lift her and set her on the desk, or bend her over it, and have her for himself. His cock thickened in response to his thoughts.

“Thank you. It’s lovely. I’ve gotten several compliments on it already today.” She smiled.

He gave a small nod. “I’m glad you like it. Today, after the staff meeting, I’ve instructed Dahlia to take you shopping. She’s one of our fashion writers and she really knows her stuff. She’ll make sure you have the appropriate attire for your position here at Runway.”

Kelly’s eyes widened. “What? No, that’s not—I can’t really afford—” She looked down and chewed on her lip.

“Kelly.” He smoothed his hand down her arm.

She looked at his hand before her eyes drifted back up to his.

“It’s on me, don’t worry about the cost.”

“Rubin, I can’t—”

“So now I’m Rubin?” He chuckled and raised a brow. When she didn’t look amused, Rubin cleared his throat and hid his smile. “Look, I want to do this for you, okay? It’s important you maintain a certain image while working at Runway.”

She crossed her arms over her chest and averted her eyes.
